This week in Reading Workshop we are exploring reading just for fun!! That's right, we are reading for enjoyment! I am reading aloud to the students. They are reading to themselves and we are reading to partners! We are sharing our favorite stories and talking/telling friends about what we've read.
This week in Writer's Workshop we are going to write a How to... (Procedural writing) on How to Make Hot Chocolate! It's going to make us all want Hot Chocolate!
This week in Word work we will continue to review/assess sight word vocabulary on each child's level.
This week in Math we will work on Comparing and Ordering numbers as well as problem solving activities this incorporate skill. We will play games to reinforce the comparing and ordering skill.
This week in Social Studies we will finish our unit on Celebrations around the world. We will end our unit with Polar Express Day. Your child may wear weather appropriate pajamas on Friday. We will read The Polar Express and then watch the movie. We will do different activities during the day that compare the movie and the book!

This week in Reader's Workshop we will wrap up our Giving Unit. Today we read a story called Something From Nothing about a little boy and his special blanket. We wrote about a special item or a special memory!
This week in Writer's Workshop we will begin Gingerbread Writing! We will explore different versions of The Gingerbread Man by various Authors. We will plan our story using a story map and write our own Gingerbread Man story. We will share our Gingerbread Writing on Friday in the Author's chair.
This week in Word Work we will review First grade Sight words. I will assess the students ability to read and write the sight words. We will play games and practice spotting our sight words in our writing.
This week in Math we will begin a unit on Compairing Numbers. We will focus on numbers to 99. We will use vocabulary like greater than, less than and equal to.
This week in Social Studies we will begin our unit on Celebrations Around the World. Today we will learn about Hanukkah by reading The Eight Nights of Hanukkah by Michael J. Rosen. We will learn about different celebrations from all around the world. We will wrap our unit up with Polar Express Day. We will wear our pajamas to school, make hot cocoa and read the Polar Express. We will watch the movie also and complete a venn diagram about the differences between the movie and the book.

Please mark your calendars with our upcoming Family Art Night, on Thursday, December 15, 6:30 - 7:30 PM. We will have art materials available for your use, and sample gift ideas for you to look at while you enjoy some creative, family time together, and make a work of art.
This year's sample idea is a personalized Family Book that may include a page made by and perhaps about each of you. Of course you may always turn the idea into your own creation, and have us "OOHHing and AHHWWing"

In Reading Workshop we are working on thinking about what our brain does as we read. We discussed how our brain plays a movie or shows us "photos" of what we are reading. It's called Envisioning what we read. The strategies we learn this week will help us comprehend what we are reading.
In Writer's Workshop we are learning about Procedural Texts. A procedural text is a piece of writing that tells us how to do something. The most common form of procedural text is a recipe. The students will be writing procedural texts this week!
In Word Work this week the Red Group is working on the Long a vs. Short a, spelled CVVC- ai, ao, ee, ea. The Blue group is working on blends; sl,bl,pl. The Green Group is working on diagraphs; s, sh and ch.
In Math we are beginning a new unit on patterns. We will explore shape patterns, letter patterns and begin working with number patterns.
In Social Studies this week we are learning about the parts of a map. Today we read a story called The Zoo Map. We learned about the compass rose and a map key or legend. The students made their own zoo maps with a compass rose and a map key.
