This week in First grade...

February 28- March 4

This week in Reading Workshop we will focus on learning about Expository Text. We read Armadilly Chili by Helen Ketteman today. We learned that expository text gives us information and/or tells us how to do something.

In Writing workshop this week we are focusing on Partnerships. We are learning to work with our partners for a purpose, stay on task and accomplish our goal. We will also be discussing how to make our stories about one subject instead of going on and on.

In Word Work we are studying the (e) sound at the end of a word spelled with a y.

The long (e) sound at the end of a multisyballic word is spelled y as in baby.

Regular words: baby, very, windy, story, family, money

Enrichment words: company, delivery, crunchy, perfectly, mystery, ordinary

Challenge: chicken, incubator

Word Wall: one, here, asked, their, take

In Math this week we will begin working on subtraction through problem solving. We will learn strategies to use to help us solve problems that involve subtraction.

In Science we are learning about animals. We will focus on reptiles and amphibians this week. We will learn about what makes them unique (characteristics or adaptations) and their life cycles.

This week in Reader's Workshop...
We will be focusing on How to be a Good Partner. We read with a partner and write with partners everyday. We will focus on how to make our partner feel good about their work and build their confidence.

In Writer's Workshop we will be starting a new unit. We will be focusing on Writing as Readers. This week we will think about writing and thinking about how others feel when they read our writing.

In Word Work our sound is the (oo) sound.

Rule: The (oo) sound in the middle of a word is spelled oo as in book.

Spelling words: shook, crook, hood, foot, took, look
Enrichment list: lookout, bookcase, cookie, firewood, goodbye, football
Challenge words: animal, research
Word Wall: know, find, why, every, been

In Math this week we are working on addition strategies. Adding doubles (2+2=4) and learning to add with doubles plus 1 (2+3=5) and plus 2 (2+4=6) facts. We will make flashcards to practice with and practice our skills in problem solving situations.

In Science we are going to begin our unit on Animals. We will learn about a different type of animal and discuss it's body and parts as well as it's life cycle.

This week in Reading Workshop...
Take home readers will be a little different. I will send home an assignment sheet that will provide directions on what to do each night. Monday nights will be devoted to practicing spelling and sight words. Take home readers will go home Tuesday and be returned Friday.

In Writer's Workshop...
We are working on our Fairy Tales. Our goal is to share our Fairy Tale with the class by the end of this week! The students are thinking of original ideas and some are taking two different fairy tales and "smashing" them together. I can't wait to hear what they've come up with.

In Word Work...
Rule: (ou) sound
The (ou) sound in the initial or medial position is spelled ou as in out.
The (ou) sound in the final position is spelled ow as in cow.

Spelling words: ouch, house, down, now, clown, loud
Challenge words: valentine, heart
Sight Word Vocabulary: father, when, home, into, after

In Math...
We are finishing our unit on Geometry. Today we learned about and explored 3D shapes. We made a class chart and discussed the attributes of 5 different 3D shapes.

In Social Studies...
We are wrapping up our Texas Unit and moving on to our US symbols unit. We will be discussing our nations history and symbols. We will also learn about famous Presidents as we approach Presidents day.

This week in Reader's Workshop...
We are finishing our unit on Fairy Tales. We examine each Fairy Tale and discuss the elements that make it a Fairy Tale. Your child will have Take Home Readers Monday, Wednesday and Thursday this week. No Writing Homework on Tuesday.

In Writer's Workshop...
We began making a plan for our very own Fairy Tales this week. The students did a prewriting activity. They will plan the beginning, middle and end of their story and sketch their ideas across pages.

In Word Work...
This weeks phonics focus is -au, -all and -aw.
Spelling Words: saw, awful, small, fall, auto, haul
Sight Word Vocabulary: when, does, now, lay, more *We will have sentence dictation this week.
Challenge: princess, magic

Next weeks words... (February 7-11)
This weeks phonics focus is -ou and -ow.
Spelling Words: ouch, house, loud, now, clown, down
Sight Word Vocabulary: father, where, into, home, after
Challenge: valentine, heart

Beginning next week the students will be taking a pre-test on Friday after our regular spelling test. This will help determine who needs more practice and who is ready to move on! We will also be doing sentence dication on each spelling test. Your child needs to be familiar with the spelling of the sight word vocabulary.

In Math this week...
We are learning about 2D shapes. We will discuss which shapes can help make up new, different shapes.

In Social Studies...
We are learning all about Texas. Our Chili Cook off is Friday! We can't wait to taste chili and write about how you make chili. We will read Armadilly Chili by Helen Ketteman to kick off our chili cook off!
