This week in First grade...

May 18-22

Thanks to everyone who supported our school by coming to the Book Fair!  Our Caraway Library raises money during the book fair so Mrs. Letendre can purchase exciting, new books to have for our students to check out in the Library!

Yesterday I was out at a Leadership Retreat with our Academic Leadership Team at IBM.  We got a personal tour of the new Mobile Lab and heard all about the wonderful advances in technology that IBM engineers!  Our goal is to produce the future workforce of Texas and keep our students current on 21st century skills!

READING and WRITING
We will continue our family writing.  I can't wait to share their writing with you.  I hope you are as entertained by them as I have been.  After finishing our family writing, we will start working on our first grade memory books.  We will remember all the great things that we did in first grade and write about those things. As always, we will emphasize on neat writing along with correct capitalization, punctuation, and sentence structure.
In reading we began the sequel to The Name of this Book is Secret (Secret Series #1).  The title of our new book (Secret Series #2) is If your Reading This it's Too Late.  These fiction books reinforce the comprehension skills and strategies we've learned this year.  It also helps get first graders interested in reading chapter books over the summer!  We will use the picture clues as well as the text clues to make predictions and inferences, visualize a part of the story or make connections.

MATH
For the next few weeks, we will work hard on problem solving.  We will review the steps of how to start the problem solving and work on different strategies that have been learning throughout the year.  Reading a math problem is like reading a story.  We need to visualize it first by drawing a relevant picture.  We need to remember the important things by underlining them, and we need to show our steps and strategies such as using a number line, ten blocks and ones, tally marks, and addition and subtraction sentences.  Whatever strategy we  use, we also need to write our thinking in words.  These steps will help the children in the long run to do more advanced problem solving in higher grades.

SOCIAL STUDIES
We will continue our unit on economics.  The children have been learning about goods and services and how some jobs produce, or make goods and other jobs provide a service.  We all need money to satisfy our needs and wants, and in order to gain money we need to have jobs.  But we also need to make wise choices and be smart about spending our money.  We will also learn about scarcity problem, when we have unlimited wants and needs and limited resources.

This week in First grade...

May 11-15

Thank you for all of the lovely treats and gifts last week! I'm still enjoying the flowers and yummies!  I just loved my Summer Survival Kit! It will be put to good use this summer as we travel and plan many trips to the pool!

Happy Mother's Day to our moms!  I hope your day was relaxing and special!

Our Field Trip was so fun!  I plan on doing a blog post with pictures from our Field Trip.  Our class was split into three groups so I will search for pictures from all of the groups!

 REMINDERS
Tuesday:  Tuesday folders come home.  Please sign and return it the next day.  Thank you!
Wednesday: Math homework is due.
Thursday: Caraway Fine Arts Night 6:30pm
Friday: Book Fair

READING and WRITING
This week we will write about our families.  We will think about each member of our family, and things they like and are interested in doing and write about those things.  We will review writing conventions such as capitalization, punctuation and correct sentence structure.  Please review the first grade sight words in your child's blue agenda and be sure to practice those at home.  Your child needs to spell those words correctly before going to second grade.

In reading we are nearing the end of our chapter book The Name of This Book is Secret.  It's getting really exciting and we love discussing the sequence of events as they unfold!  While we ready we review important comprehension strategies such as retelling the story, putting the events in the order that they happened and making inferences.  This chapter book has very few pictures so we really have to visualize what is happening in our minds!

MATH
This week we will work review strategies for addition and subtraction and apply those strategies in problem solving.  If you are practicing problem solving with your child at home, please be sure the steps such as drawing a picture to show the problem, the relevant addition and subtraction number sentences, and words to explain their thinking are all shown on the paper.

SOCIAL STUDIES
This week  we will continue our unit on goods and services. Goods are produced and services are provided in our community.  We will identify and discuss examples of goods and services, ways people exchange goods and services and the role of market and services in our community.  As part of media literacy, we will learn about advertisement and how people advertise for either goods or services in our community.

READING and WRITING
We are almost done with our poetry book and I am so proud of my students' beautiful poems. This week we will work on a secret project.  We will use our writing skills, our artistic abilities and all we can do, to say thank you to complete our secret project! We are still in the middle of reading assessments.  This is the time that your child reads to me individually and I get to enjoy the progress that they have made throughout the year.  Please make sure, your child gets at least 15-20 minutes of reading time at home each night.  Thank you!

MATH
We will continue the measurement unit and explore the capacity and weight of 3D shapes.  We will define capacity as the amount that something can hold and use vocabulary such as full, half full, or empty to describe the capacity of various sized containers.  We will use non-standard units such as scoops of rice, or glasses of water to measure the capacity of three-dimensional objects. We will also use non-standard units such as linking cubes and balancing tools to compare the weight of 3-D objects.
We will apply our knowledge in solving math problems.

SOCIAL STUDIES
This week we will learn about goods and services. Goods are produced and services are provided in our community.  We will identify and discuss examples of goods and services, ways people exchange goods and services and the role of market and services in our community.

Learning and Laughing from the past week!

We've been super busy this past week! Here are some of the things we did!
We watched round #2 of our chicks hatch on Tuesday and Wednesday!

We are half way through our chapter book that we listen to. Some times Mrs.C reads, sometimes Audible reads the story to them and Spencer follows along so we don't miss the pictures!

On Thursday we took our devices outside to the butterfly garden to record our observations of pollination through photos! We went back inside and recorded our learning in our Science Notebooks!

Field Day!!
Tattoos and popsicles!

Water!!

Last station of the day!

Round 2 chickies! Almost ready to go to their new home!

Thank you to all of the parents who volunteered on Field Day!! We appreciate ALL of your help!!
