This week in First grade...

August 29- September 2

Reminders:
-Folders will go home on Tuesdays. Please empty them and send them back on Wednesday with any forms or paperwork that was completed.
-Labor day Holiday- Monday, September 5th
-Open House is Tuesday, September 6th at 6:30pm

In Reading Workshop this week we will be establishing routines and discussing our feelings about reading. Please have your child bring their favorite book to school on Wednedsday. We will be sharing our favorite books and learning about different kinds of books.

In Word Study this week we will begin Words Their Way. This is a spelling, phonics and word study program designed to meet the needs of individual learners. We completed the assessment last week. We will begin learning the routines of our word study time and will complete a whole class sort. I will be sharing more about this program with you during Open House.

In Writer's Workshop this week we are thinking about how authors choose topics. Today we thought of a topic and sketched it on writing paper. Tomorrow we will add words that match our picture. We will learn what writers do when they finish a story!

In Math we are wrapping up our unit on Data and Graphing and moving on to telling time. Students in first grade will be able to tell time to the half hour on an analog and digital clock. Practice telling time at home!

In Social Studies we are learning about Citizenship and Communities. Today we began talking about the importance of leaders in a community!

This week in First grade...

August 23-26

What a great first day of school!! I've gotten so many hugs and sweet smiles all day! We learned a lot about procedures and expectations today and we will continue to practice all we learned throughout the year. I loved seeing all the fun pink things your children brought after checking out our blog! Thanks to Isaiah's mom for making pink cookies for the students to enjoy!

-Tuesday folders are coming home today. Please empty them out, fill out and return paperwork. Please send them back with your child on Wednesday.
-Open house will be Tuesday, September 6th in the evening.
-Take home folders (orange) will not begin coming home until September 6th.

We are learning the procedures for Reading and Writing workshop. Today we began a writing assessment that I will share with you at conference time. We will begin an assessment for our word study program called Words Their Way in the next few days.

In Social Studies we are learning about Citizenship. Today we discussed rules, why we need them and where we have them!

In Math we are learning about graphs. We make a class graph showing the ways we all go home! It will be posted outside our door all year!

Welcome to First grade!!

Take a look around! Of course most of what you see is from last year but I will be adding new things and posting our newsletters very soon!! The secret homework assignment is bring something pink with you to school on the first day! Mrs. Caballero's favorite color is pink! I can't wait to learn more about each of you!
