This week in First Grade...

In Reading workshop...
We will have Take Home Readers this week. I am wrapping up assessments and will reconfigure groupings. Your child may come home with 2 take home readers. One on their current level and one on a higher level to encourage further development of skills.
Writing Homework...this week I will send home an activity on Tuesday and Thursday for each student to complete. The homework is due the following day, Wednesday and Friday. I've been receiving homework here and there from the students. Please help teach them the importance of completing a task and turning in their work.

In Writing Workshop this week...
We are having a free writing week while some students finish snowman stories and I finish assessments. Next week we will begin writing our Fairy Tales.

In Word Work:
This week we are focusing on the sound -ur, -ir and -er (all say "er").

Spelling words: church, turn, first, girl, her, summer
Challenge words: Texas, quarter
Sight word Vocabulary: your, down, friend, who, them

In Math...
We are learning about 2D and 3D shapes. We began the unit by doing a shape sort and discussing the attributes of some 2D shapes. Please continue to work on identifying coins and values with your child. I will send home an assessment each student completed last week to give you an idea of what they need to work on.

In Social Studies...
We are learning about our great state, Texas! We are making a Texas book all about the symbols and landmarks in our state. We will finish our unit next week with Chili Cookoff. Thank you Kathleen Trail for volunteering to make the chili!

In Reader's Workshop...
This week I am completing TPRI assessments. There will be no Take Home Readers or Writing Homework.
We have started our unit on Fairy Tales. We will study the elements of a Fairy Tale and read different Fairy Tales. We will have a Fairy Tale Parade on Thursday, January 27th at 9:15am. A note with specific information went home in the Tuesday folder.

In Writer's Workshop we are finishing our Snowman stories so we can share our stories with the class in the Author's Chair. We will begin learning about writing sequencing stories and planning more details in our writing.

In Word Work our sounds this week are -ar and -or. R controlled vowels are a pair and work together.
Spelling words: barn, star, jar, corn, porch, fort
Challenge words: fairy, cylinder
Sight word vocabulary: were, very, play, stop, walk

In Math we are finishing our unit on Money. Please continue to review coins and values with your child at home.

In Social Studies we began our unit on Texas. We will learn about our state and symbols. We will end our unit in two weeks with a Chili Cookoff. If you are interested in making chili for our class to taste test please let me know.

This week in First Grade...

*A note about Winter Weather... It is going to be cold Tuesday and Wednesday. Please make sure your child wears appropriate outerwear including a heavy coat, possibly gloves and a hat. If it is not raining we will still go outside. We may only go out briefly but we will go out.

In Reading Workshop...
We are working on making connections when we reading and analyzing the story. We are also talking about what it means to be a specialist and how you can learn through reading and asking questions. The students will have Take Home Readers, Monday-Thursday along with Writing homework two days each week. Please make sure that your child completes their writing homework, which will be related to their reading, the night it is assigned.

In Writer's Workshop...
We are practing writing with a prompt. The students will go through the writing process and write an original story about a Snowman. Today we did a story outline and then began sketching our ideas across pages to prepare us for writing. Our goal is to have a final product this Friday to hang in the hallway.

In Word Work...
Our sound this week is oi, oy
Spelling words: oil, soil, coin, joy, toy, enjoy
Challenge words: nickel, energy
Sight word Vocabulary: or, went, girl, too, over

In Math...
We are learning about Money in our groups. Each student completed an assessment and was put in a leveled math group to work on this skill. The first grade TEKS state that the students should be able to identify and know the value of coins, penny, nickel, dime, quarter. They will also need to know how many pennies are needed to make up each coin. For example, a nickel is worth 5 cents or 5 pennies.

In Science...
We are learning about energy (heat) changing objects. Today we did an experiment with Ice Melting. We watched the ice melt on a piece of black paper for 15 minutes. Then we made predictions as to what the ice would look like when we came back from lunch. We made a chart to illustrate our discoveries in our Science Notebook.

This week in Reading Workshop we will get back into the groove of Take Home Readers. Each child has a new bag to bring their books back and forth in. I will begin mid-year Reading assessments in a couple of weeks.

In Writer's Workshop we will review writing about small moments for the next two weeks before we move on to our next unit.

In Word Work this week our sound is the (oa) sound. The (oa) sound in a one syllable word is spelled oa as in boat.

Spelling Words: loaf, boat, soap, float, toad, road
Challenge Words: snowman, folktale
Sight word Vocabulary: old, boy, could, red, here

In math this week we will begin our unit on Money. The students are expected to identify each type of coin and know it's value. We will take a pre-assessment and each student will be in a group according to their knowledge of money. Each teacher in first grade will take a group of students to work with. Our unit will span two weeks. Review coin names and values at home!

In Science this week we will continue our unit on Matter and Energy from the previous nine weeks. We will discuss how energy (heat) can change an object. We will do hands on experiments to help us see the changes.
