Language Arts:
In Language Arts we will continue our genre focus on Folktales/Fables. The children have loved trying to figure out the moral or lesson in the stories and identifying the elements. In Reader’s Workshop during read-to-self and read-with-partner we will be working on the following comprehension strategies: importance of understanding, when readers understand their voices sound smooth, they can picture the story, retell the story easily and just know what they read. In Writer’s Workshop we will start our unit on Small Moments: Personal Narrative Writing. We will learn what a small moment story is and the importance of stretching that small moment across several pages because it is so important. We will learn to listen to how published authors stretch a moment across several pages and we will begin writing our own small moment stories.

Math:
We will begin our unit on money. This unit will last for two weeks. This week we will focus on identifying the penny, nickel, and dime by name and value and describe relationships among them. We will make a K-W-L chart in our math journals for each coin. We will also make a book for each coin and list the different attributes about the coins. The books will go home at the end of the unit. Next week we will talk about the quarter and we need to keep the books for the children to use for activities at the end of next week.

Social Studies:
We will focus this week on how technology has shaped our community. We will talk about how things were done long ago vs. today with our mail, travel, printing, telephones, computers, etc.

Fairy Tale Parade ***Thursday***
First Grade will be having a Fairy Tale Parade on Thursday, January 18th at 8:45 to celebrate the end of our Fairy Tale Unit. Please have your child come to school dressed as their favorite fairy tale character. Please do not think that you have to go out and buy a costume for your child. You and your child can make a homemade mask and/or costume. This should be fun….not stressful!

Also, if you can, please have your child’s snack reflect what he/she dressed up as. For example, if your child is dressed as Snow White, send apple slices for her. If he is dressed as the wolf from Little Red Riding Hood, maybe send cookies with him.

The parade will start at 8:45 and we will walk all around the school. We would love for you to come and cheer us on! If you have any questions, please ask your child’s teacher.

Thanks!
First Grade

In Reading Workshop we are reading Fractured Fairy Tales. We began our discussion by compairing a familiar Fairy Tale with a Fractured Fairy Tale. We read Cindy Ellen, A Wild Western Cinderella Story and compared it with the traditional version of Cinderella we read at the beginning of our Fairy Tale Unit. We will read and compare a couple of other Fractured Fairy Tales.

In Writer's Workshop we began thinking of our own Fairy Tale. We began by sketching our ideas across pages so we could get our ideas on paper.

In Word Work we began working with new sounds. The Green Group is reviewing "H" friends, sh,ch,th,wh. Blue group is reviewing cr, cl, fr, fl. Red Group is working on spelling words with the Long a and Short a sounds four different ways. I will send home note next week about our changes in Word Work.

In Math we began a new unit on Geometry. We began by exploring 1 dimensional shapes and discussing their characteristics.

In Science we began a new unit on Motion and Movement. We will do an experiement tomorrow where we observe the movement from one place to another of a wind up toy. If your child has a wind up toy he/she would like to bring to use during our experiement please send it tomorrow mornign.

Have a great week!

In Reading Workshop we are reading and discussing Fairy Tales. We made a chart with the elements of a Fairy Tale and we are checking off the elements we discuss in each story as we read. A note will come home in the Tuesday Folder about our Fairy Tale Parade next week.

In Writer's Workshop we will begin writing our very own Fairy Tales! We will begin by planning out our story from beginning to end on writer's workshop paper. Then we will make a story map to make sure we have all of the elements of Fairy Tales in our own story!

In Word Work we are working on the same sounds as last week. I have stapled a note to a practice spelling test we took last Friday. I will write more next week about our weekly Spelling Tests.
