This week in first grade...

February 24-28, 2014

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you for my lovely Valentine Treats!  My little girls loved the sweet treats!  Our party was a hit with the kids! They are still talking about it!  Thank you to our homeroom Moms, Kristin Indriago and Jill Malinger for a great party!  Everyone helped out and it was great!  We all caught Chocolate Fever!

Math:  The Count On subtraction strategy is introduced in this unit. The primary strategy for subtraction is “Think Addition” therefore, students need to have mastered the Count On addition facts prior to introducing the Count On subtraction strategy.  Count On Addition (5+1=6, count on one example) was introduced in the fall semester.  Students will be working on problem solving situations during this time as well.

Reading Workshop:  This week in Reading Workshop, we will talk about asking questions before, during and after reading.  We will learn why it is important to ask questions and what types of questions we might want to ask.  We will also talk about how sometimes our questions aren’t answered…and that’s ok!

Reading Workshop:  This week we will focus on learning about the holiday: President's Day and introducing a new genre for reading: Historical Fiction.  We will learn about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln and why we celebrate this holiday.  The students will compare and contrast the two presidents.  Look for them in the hallways!  We will also focus on identifying a new genre called Historical Fiction.  The students will learn what it is and the characteristics that make up this genre.
*Reading Homework: Biographies or Non-Fiction books about Abraham Lincoln and George Washington are the highlight of our At Home Reading this week.  I challenged the students to find more information about the Presidents we celebrate on this day.  Please help your child find a book or online article to learn more about these presidents.  On the library website there is a search engine called Searchasaurus (next to EBSCO) that has leveled articles from periodicals such as Scholastic Kids or Ranger Rick.  You can search by subject and find many resources!

Reading Workshop:  This week we will introduce the students to biographies.  They will learn that biographies are true stories about a real person.  Our focus will be on three characteristics of biographies: 1. Take place during a real historical time period. 2. Tell about a person's life in chronological order. 3. Written about people who have made a significant contribution to society.

Social Studies:  This week, we will finish up our Texas unit.  We will then begin to read Biographies about a leader in our Community (Sam Houston) and Inventors (Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Edison).  We will talk about what a timeline is and we will create a timeline of Alexander Graham Bell’s life as well.
