This week in Reading Workshop we will be learning about how strong readers understand what they read. We will work on reading for enjoyment and reading to learn.
This week in Writer's Workshop we will be wrapping up our focus on creative writing (imagination stories). We will complete the writing process and share the stories we've written.
In Word Work this week we are focusing on the High Frequency word list. There will be no test. The students will be assessed on reading of the words, spelling (pre-test) and using the words in their writing.

In Math this week we are revisiting estimating, compairing and ordering weight, mass and capacity. We will use balences to weigh difference objects with non-standard forms of measurement such as teddy bear manipulatives and beans. **Please send me an email with your child's birth weight and height. We will be using this information on Wednesday to order and compare the students as babies!**
In Science this week we will wrap up our unit on Plants. We will discuss what all plants need to survive, life cycle of a plant and the parts and functions of plants. On our field trip we will learn more about plants and their functions. The students will have a fun little take-home project that they will complete at the farm. **Please let me know if you plan on meeting us at the farm. So far, Mr. Menke, Mr. Burrow, and Mrs. Duff have let me know they are coming.**

This week in First grade...

This week in Reading Workshop we are learning about things that strong readers do. We will make an anchor chart to help us remember characteristics of strong readers.
In Writing Workshop this week we will continue the writing process and write creative, imagination stories to share with the class on Friday.
In Word Work we are reviewing High Frequency Words. I will assess the students on their ability to spell the words, use them in their writing and read them correctly. No enrichment this week.
Words: a, about, after, all, an, and, are, as, going, got, had, has, have, her, him, may, me, mom, no, not, now, of, my, them, then, there, they, this, to, two
In Math this week we will be problem solvers and work to solve two step word problems. We will begin working a problem in a sequential order. The students will be expected to show a strategy used to solve the problem, a number sentence and write an explanation of how they solved the problem.
In Science this week we will begin our study of plants. We discussed seeds today and started soaking our seeds so that we can plant them in soil tomorrow. We will watch our seeds and see what they grow into!

This week in First Grade...

We will find them in our reading and use them in our writing during Writer's Workshop. This week in Writer's workshop we will focus on creative writing. We will use our imaginations to think of a story to write. We will share our ideas and stories during the week. In Word Work we are working on ending sounds. Regular Words: half, dust, raft, mask, melt, silk Enrichment words: against, honest, mustang, difficult, predict, conflict Sight Word Vocabulary: these, then, their, first and last name Challenge words: technology, subtraction In Math this week we will be working on Subtraction strategies to use during problem solving. We will share our strategies and learn new strategies to help us become expert problem solvers. In Social Studies this week we will be comparing and contrasting the contributions of famous People. We have learned about many people who have made a difference in history. We will also discuss how technology has changed the way we live today.
