Language Arts:
In Language Arts we will continue our genre focus on Folktales/Fables. The children have loved trying to figure out the moral or lesson in the stories and identifying the elements. In Reader’s Workshop during read-to-self and read-with-partner we will be working on the following comprehension strategies: importance of understanding, when readers understand their voices sound smooth, they can picture the story, retell the story easily and just know what they read. In Writer’s Workshop we will start our unit on Small Moments: Personal Narrative Writing. We will learn what a small moment story is and the importance of stretching that small moment across several pages because it is so important. We will learn to listen to how published authors stretch a moment across several pages and we will begin writing our own small moment stories.
Math:
We will begin our unit on money. This unit will last for two weeks. This week we will focus on identifying the penny, nickel, and dime by name and value and describe relationships among them. We will make a K-W-L chart in our math journals for each coin. We will also make a book for each coin and list the different attributes about the coins. The books will go home at the end of the unit. Next week we will talk about the quarter and we need to keep the books for the children to use for activities at the end of next week.
Social Studies:
We will focus this week on how technology has shaped our community. We will talk about how things were done long ago vs. today with our mail, travel, printing, telephones, computers, etc.

We are learning about Folktales. Today we watched Goldilocks and the Three Bears on Book Flix (available on the Library's web page). We thought about the elements of a fairy tale and made a chart of the elements of a folktale. We will read different Folktales this week and discuss the elements, characters and plot of each tale.
This week in Word Work...
This week we will have our first "real" spelling test. The students have done very well with their practice tests. I've posted the words on the blog according to each group. Your child's list may contain words from the First grade High Frequency List as well as words that fall into their "sound" for the week.
