This week in First Grade...

In Reading workshop we will be learning how to use books to learn information and how to research. We will be sending home an Animal Research Project in the Tuesday folder. This will be in leiu of Take Home Readers. We will practice researching and taking notes in class and the students will check out a book to bring home.

In Writer's Workshop we are finishing our class newspaper. The students have done a magnificent job of writing about the things that have happened in our classroom. Our newspaper will be posted on the wall outside of our classroom later this week! Come by and see it!

In Word Work we are focusing on the (kw) sound spelled qu.
Regular Words: quit, queen, quilt, quiet, squid, equal
Enrichment words: conquest, liquid, quarter, banquet, equality, qualify
Challenge words: leprechaun, shamrock

In Math this week we are learning about Fact Families. For example 2, 3 and 5 make the fact family 2+3=5, 3+2=5, 5-2=3 and 5-3=2. This will help the students learn math facts that are related to each other. We will work on solving problems with fact families later this week.

In Science we are wrapping up our unit on Animals. Next we will learn and research Animal Habitats. The students will split up into groups and be responsible for making a habitat which will include animals native to a region, their adaptations and surroundings!

In Reading Workshop this week we will begin discussing our Animal Research project. We will begin learning researching skills and practice with texts in our classroom. This will continue after Spring Break.


In Writer's Workshop we will begin to learn about Peer Editing! We will practice helping our partner with spelling, punctuation and capitalization. We will continue to write independantly focusing on "writing more and more clearly".



In Word Work our sound is the (g) spelled as g or ge.


The (j) sound sound before e, i, or y is spelled g as in gem.


The final (j) sound after a consonant, long vowel, or vowel pair is spelled ge as in hinge.


Regular word list: germ, gym, giant, cage, large, huge


Enrichment list: gigantic, digest, engage, revenge, strange, gentle

Word Wall Words: all, end, then, house, oil

In Math we are working on solving Subtraction problems. We are working with our problem solving skills and using two strategies to show how we solve problems. Please begin reviewing addition and subtraction facts at home.

In Science we are learning about animals. This week we are studying birds and insects.

This week in Reading Workshop we will focus on learning about Expository Text. We read Armadilly Chili by Helen Ketteman today. We learned that expository text gives us information and/or tells us how to do something.

In Writing workshop this week we are focusing on Partnerships. We are learning to work with our partners for a purpose, stay on task and accomplish our goal. We will also be discussing how to make our stories about one subject instead of going on and on.

In Word Work we are studying the (e) sound at the end of a word spelled with a y.

The long (e) sound at the end of a multisyballic word is spelled y as in baby.

Regular words: baby, very, windy, story, family, money

Enrichment words: company, delivery, crunchy, perfectly, mystery, ordinary

Challenge: chicken, incubator

Word Wall: one, here, asked, their, take

In Math this week we will begin working on subtraction through problem solving. We will learn strategies to use to help us solve problems that involve subtraction.

In Science we are learning about animals. We will focus on reptiles and amphibians this week. We will learn about what makes them unique (characteristics or adaptations) and their life cycles.
