*A note about Winter Weather... It is going to be cold Tuesday and Wednesday. Please make sure your child wears appropriate outerwear including a heavy coat, possibly gloves and a hat. If it is not raining we will still go outside. We may only go out briefly but we will go out.

In Reading Workshop...
We are working on making connections when we reading and analyzing the story. We are also talking about what it means to be a specialist and how you can learn through reading and asking questions. The students will have Take Home Readers, Monday-Thursday along with Writing homework two days each week. Please make sure that your child completes their writing homework, which will be related to their reading, the night it is assigned.

In Writer's Workshop...
We are practing writing with a prompt. The students will go through the writing process and write an original story about a Snowman. Today we did a story outline and then began sketching our ideas across pages to prepare us for writing. Our goal is to have a final product this Friday to hang in the hallway.

In Word Work...
Our sound this week is oi, oy
Spelling words: oil, soil, coin, joy, toy, enjoy
Challenge words: nickel, energy
Sight word Vocabulary: or, went, girl, too, over

In Math...
We are learning about Money in our groups. Each student completed an assessment and was put in a leveled math group to work on this skill. The first grade TEKS state that the students should be able to identify and know the value of coins, penny, nickel, dime, quarter. They will also need to know how many pennies are needed to make up each coin. For example, a nickel is worth 5 cents or 5 pennies.

In Science...
We are learning about energy (heat) changing objects. Today we did an experiment with Ice Melting. We watched the ice melt on a piece of black paper for 15 minutes. Then we made predictions as to what the ice would look like when we came back from lunch. We made a chart to illustrate our discoveries in our Science Notebook.

Have a warm week!
Mrs. Caballero
