This week in First grade...

April 6-10

I hope you enjoyed some family time over the weekend.  The Caballeros were busy!  From a golf outing to the movies, a train ride to Burnet and celebrations with our families here and in New Braunfels we are exhausted!  I look forward to a calm week!

READING and WRITING

Our first graders did a fantastic job researching facts and information about chicks. They are all becoming research experts! We borrowed the iPads from Mrs. Rinehart's classroom and made presentations with our chick research.  

Some made a Smore (digital flyer/poster)...

Some made a Prezi (similar to powerpoint)...

One used an application called My Story and made a book with titles then put audio clips in for the listening pleasure of the audience!

These kids did an amazing job! 

This week we will move on to independent research about animals.  On Thursday each student chose an animal from the three animal groups of birds, fish and mammals.  Today I sent home the book they choose and a Reading and Analyzing Nonfiction chart.  We used this chart as a class to organize our learning about chicks.  In our classroom the students will utilize the Library website and search engines to find out more about their animal as they independently research facts about their animal's body parts, habitat, food, movement, life cycle and interesting facts.  

MATH
This week we will apply our problem solving strategies to solve a variety of math word problems involving time, money, addition and subtraction.  In first grade we emphasize showing the steps involved in solving the problem.  These steps are reading the problem carefully, underlining important data and information, drawing picture and show any strategy that they have learned such as number line, addition and subtraction strategies to solve the problem.  Showing the steps in an organized form allows the students to understand the problem better and use thinking strategies. 



SCIENCES
This week in science we are taking our knowledge of animals, their habitats and interdependency of living things and using it to take a closer look at our neighborhood and animals that live in our community.  We will start a project that focuses on how deer impact our community.
