This week in First Grade...

April 27-May 1

I hope everyone had a great weekend!  Only 29 days left with these kiddos!  We're making it count and working hard!
Registration forms: They came home last week in the Tuesday Folder.  I received about 8.  Please return those ASAP!

Round 1 of our chicks are growing fast.  Here's a peek at what they've been up to!  They will be here briefly in the morning before they go to their forever home!

READING HOMEWORK
Starting today, I will begin the end of the year reading assessment.  This is a special time where each child reads to me individually and I will assess their reading skills based on their comprehension and fluency. The reading assessment will take a few weeks to complete. As always, your child needs to be reading at home daily using self-selected books, or on-line resources such as RAZ-kids, pebble-Go, or Mackin-VIA.  Reading Logs will continue to come back and forth until the last week of school.  Our purpose for recording what we read is to read a variety of genres and find the one we LOVE!

FIELD DAY
Field Day is on this Friday, May 1st at 12:30-2:20  I emailed a note about it last Friday.  There were specific directions for that day! Our lunch time is at 10:45-11:20 on Field Day.

 REMINDERS

FridayLibrary Day.  All library books are due by 8:00 AM
Reading Log/folder is due. Field Day!

READING and WRITING
We are continuing with our unit on poetry and we will be learning how to find inspiration in our hearts to write poetry.  What really matters to you?  We will start the week off exploring different feeling/emotion words and follow it up with writing a feelings/emotion poem.  Next we will explore the concrete or shape poetry. In this type of poetry, the words form shapes which illustrates the poem's subject as a picture. The last set of poetry we will explore this week will be poetry using our 5 senses. We will read different examples, focusing on the parts with the 5 senses and write our own poems using sensory words.

MATH
This week we will start a measurement unit and explore the capacity and weight of 3-D shapes.  We will define capacity as the amount that something can hold and use vocabulary such as full, half full, or empty to describe the capacity of various sized containers.  We will use non-standard units such as scoops of rice, or glasses of water to measure the capacity of three-dimensional objects. We will also use non-standard units such as linking cubes and balancing tools to compare the weight of 3D objects.

SCIENCES
We will continue our plant unit and learn about different parts of plant and their function.  We will learn that roots carry the water and nutrients from the soil, stems hold up the plant and transport the nutrients and water from the roots to other parts of plant and leaves make food.  We will also learn about the plant life cycle.  We will plant a Lima bean and watch the growth process by observing the growing roots, shooting stem and leaves.

Round #2 of our chicks are due to hatch this week!  Look what I found this afternoon!

This week in First grade...

April 20-24

This week, Monday through Thursday, the 3rd, 4th and 5th graders are taking the STAAR test.  Our campus will be closed to visitors until Friday.

Last Wednesday our first round of chicks began to hatch.  We have two out of three possible eggs hatch.  Sadly, one of our babies was not strong enough!  Our little "Brownie" passed away last night.  We are counting down to our second round of chicks that are due to hatch on April 29th.

Here's a picture of Lyla and Lily watching the chicks play in the yard this weekend.

FridayLibrary Day.  All library books are due by 8:00 AM
Homework folder is due.

READING and WRITING
This week we will begin a new genre, a favorite among teachers and past first grade students, Poetry. We will learn about the features of poetry. Poems have short lines with no punctuation most of the times. There are repeating words or phrases in poetry. Poems sometimes rhyme and sometimes they don't. Poems have rhythms, some are songs and some could be silly and funny. We will think about how poets see the world in different, fresh and unusual ways. The students will make inferences with poetry as a strategy to comprehend the poem. We will also discover sensory language in poetry and understand that sensory images help us visualize the poem and make it more interesting for readers. In writing we will “See with Poets’ Eyes” as we begin writing about ordinary objects in different ways. We will learn that poems are big thoughts in little packages.

Homework this week will be free choice reading from a variety of genres.  This is a great time to encourage your child to read their Library books or take a family trip to the library.  I've checked the Reading Logs and they will come home today.

MATH
This week we will learn about 3D shapes.  We will identify three-dimensional figures such as spheres, cones, cylinders, rectangular prisms (including cubes), and triangular prisms and describe their attributes using geometric language such as flat surface, curved surface, having corners or not any corners, being able to stack or not. We will look at everyday objects around us and compare them to the 3D shapes that we are learning about.

SCIENCE

Our Deer project was a success! We researched great ideas to keep the deer away from our plants and flowers.  The kids created great posters to educate the community about their findings!  Please look for their posters in the hall (on Friday) or around the school.
This week we will learn about plants, their parts and the function of each part.  We will compare and contrast the parts of one plant to another and find the similarities and differences.  For example, we will compare the roots of carrots and radish and see how the stem of celery and parsley can be different.

This week in First grade...

April 13-17

I hope everyone had a wonderful, relaxing weekend!  Lyla and I spent some time with her Daisy Troop at Camp TexLake followed by some fun in the wildflowers!

Our chicks...
About two weeks ago I opened our incubator and there was no heat! So our sweet baby chicks never had a chance to start developing.  Mrs. Amiri's incubator decided to stop working over the weekend so her eggs suffered the same fate!  The good news is we had a second incubator set up for our 3 extra eggs.  Those little guys look great!  Hopefully we'll see them hatch later this week.
Our first grade team decided to purchase an additional two dozen eggs.  So, our count down is on for our second hatchers!  There due date is April 29th!

This is a fun video of what it will be like to see our babies hatch!

This morning I introduced the idea of commenting to interact with our class blog.  I showed the students where to go to add a comment.  I explained that a comment is a short note or question you can post.  I told the students that once they comment an email will be sent to me and I will review their comment then publish it.  Encourage your child to add a comment about the video or chick hatching.  Interacting with virtual content is a 21st century skill!

 **REMINDERS**
Monday: Homework Folders come home. There will be two Time for Kids activities and no math homework this week!
Tuesday: Tuesday folders come home.  Please sign and return it the next day.  Thank you!
Wednesday: HATCH DAY! Our first round of chicks should begin to hatch! If you have newspaper or small pet bedding you would like to donate send it in on Wednesday!
Thursday:
Friday: Homework folder is due.
Library Day.  All library books are due by 8:00 AM

READING and WRITING
We are continuing with our animal research this week.  The students are locating sources for information in books, magazines and online on our Caraway Library website, synthesizing it and recording it in their own words.  They are using features in non-fiction books such as the table of contents, real photos, captions, labels, maps and diagrams to find the answers to their questions.  There are times that we find an expert (friends that know so much about a particular animal) and ask them some of our questions. Our goal is to become an expert on our animal so we can "publish" our book and send them down to a Kindergarten class!

MATH
This week we will review and work more on place value.  We will use concrete and pictorial models to compose and decompose numbers up to 120 in more than one way as so many hundreds, so many tens, and so many ones. For example one hundred can be shown as 100 ones, 10 groups of tens, or 1 one hundred.  This will help us to read and write three-digit numbers that do not involve teens.  For example, 105 has one 100, 0 tens and 5 ones. We will use our knowledge of place value and apply it in math problem solving.

SCIENCES
This week we will continue our PBL (Project Based Learning) about the impact of deer in our community.  We have done some research about the plants and flowers that deer don't like and this week we will continue our research to find out more about this. Our goal is to find out about the problems and challenges that impact our community and the deer to find out possible solutions.  Be on the lookout for our student-created posters that will educate our community on the best solutions for deer resistant plants.  There is a QR code you can scan that will direct you to our class blog where the students will publish more detailed information!

READING and WRITING
Our first graders did a fantastic job researching facts and information about chicks. They are all becoming research experts! We borrowed the iPads from Mrs. Rinehart's classroom and made presentations with our chick research.

Some made a Smore (digital flyer/poster)...

Some made a Prezi (similar to powerpoint)...

One used an application called My Story and made a book with titles then put audio clips in for the listening pleasure of the audience!

These kids did an amazing job!

This week we will move on to independent research about animals.  On Thursday each student chose an animal from the three animal groups of birds, fish and mammals.  Today I sent home the book they choose and a Reading and Analyzing Nonfiction chart.  We used this chart as a class to organize our learning about chicks.  In our classroom the students will utilize the Library website and search engines to find out more about their animal as they independently research facts about their animal's body parts, habitat, food, movement, life cycle and interesting facts.

MATH
This week we will apply our problem solving strategies to solve a variety of math word problems involving time, money, addition and subtraction.  In first grade we emphasize showing the steps involved in solving the problem.  These steps are reading the problem carefully, underlining important data and information, drawing picture and show any strategy that they have learned such as number line, addition and subtraction strategies to solve the problem.  Showing the steps in an organized form allows the students to understand the problem better and use thinking strategies.

SCIENCES
This week in science we are taking our knowledge of animals, their habitats and interdependency of living things and using it to take a closer look at our neighborhood and animals that live in our community.  We will start a project that focuses on how deer impact our community.
